Motel Eola: Go to School the 3rd [2012]

Motel Eola comes to school us one last time. Go to School the 3rd is the third and final installment in Motel Eola’s short EP series featuring original instrumentals and some classy remixes. Incorporating great pitches of R&B vocals, as well as soulful sounds and invigorating ambiance, Motel Eola stays right in his own lane in all of his music, and continues that on Go to School the 3rd.

The soft-singing in the beginning of “Left Me” is outstanding as an opening to the project and the perfect segway for a nice beat drop. The beat and the drums itself are really dope on this one. The only issue that arises is the confusing sample; repetitive chopped up vocals somewhat distract sometimes from the track and tend to be misleading at times. However, at other times, the sample chop is perfect and easy to feel. But the fact that it remains inconsistent for some time kind of brought down the power of the soulful intro.

“Warm,” the second track on the EP definitely amped up its quality from its first-track predecessor. A smooth, yet playful set of piano keys opens the track up before some live-sounding drums kick in and glide right along the melodic instrument sample. This is the kind of joint you can lay back and vibe to for hours and hours, something that is hard to do with a great portion of today’s music. I love this track and firmly believe it is one of Motel Eola’s best beats yet. If this beat is anything like his upcoming album, I think everyone will be in for a lovely treat.

The final song on the album is a remix of Blu‘s “Soul Provider.” A gritty beat break knocks as Blu chants the introduction to the song. When his first starts, soulful “ooohs” sing out behind Blu’s fire flow. Blu’s rhymes are a little bit too harsh for the instrumental Motel Eola provided for him; although the beat itself is especially dope and the rhythm is right on point, I feel it isn’t as “hard” as it should be for Blu’s bars. Nonetheless, it’s a good beat, and that’s what Motel Eola deserves credit for, making a good beat.

With that, the Go to School series by Motel Eola comes to a satisfying conclusion. Although I wouldn’t say this was his best EP in the series, it was definitely a nice set of instrumentals (plus a remix). This UK producer is a real soulful dude with an interesting sound and it would do you good to get familiar. The project is available for FREE stream and download from Bandcamp.
