Rob Milton: Songs From The Internet

One of my New Years’ resolutions for the Hip Hop Speakeasy is 2015 is to post more R&B. I have a few selections on deck, so I’ll start with Rob Milton‘s end of 2014 release, Songs From The Internet. The Richmond singer pairs his lounge-worthy voice with spacey rhodes chords and less-synthetic drums than your typical, mainstream R&B. Being neo-soul oriented, as well, there’s an underlying hip-hop influence on this album the sees its way through drum breaks and record scratches. There’s a number of features on Songs From The Internet, but Rob Milton holds his own and creates a wavy R&B/neo-soul record arguably unlike anything you’ve ever heard. Pay attention to the project’s single, “The Light (feat. Chance Fischer),” it’s a sure standout with its video-gamey, off-key tones radiating over looming baselines and Milton’s echoing vocals. The album is available over at Bandcamp for purchase.
