born-like-this

I personally feel this is one of, if not DOOM‘s most underrated project he’s ever released. Born Like This came out in 2009 to little fanfare from what I could tell. It even received a lower aggregated rating from professional reviewers than his past efforts. But I for one thoroughly enjoy this album and have enjoyed listening to the album since I bought back when it came out. I shouldn’t have to turn you on to an MF DOOM album, but here we go… My personal favorite track “Gazillion Ear” kicks off the album as DOOM spits one long, dope verse over two combined Dilla beats. Wait, what? DOOM over a Dilla beat?? Two at that? It almost gets no better than this, people! The song is just crazy DOOM rhyming full of classic metaphors, quirky rhymes and ridiculous bars. Then, a short, but entertaining “Ballskin” comes on and leads into the phenomenal song “Yessir! (feat. Raekwon).” Man, when I saw Raekwon on a track with MF DOOM, I was going crazy. How people don’t talk about this song in everyday hip hop conversations is beyond me. A few other great tracks are “Absolutely,” “Still Dope (feat. Empress Stahhr)” and “That’s That.” “Absolutely” is pretty hardcore for DOOM and might take some time for DOOM-heads to get used, but I really like that song. “Still Dope” doesn’t even have DOOM rhyming on the track, but instead features one incredible femcee named Empress Stahhr. Her rhymes are just insane and she goes nonstop from start to finish over a slick instrumental produced by MF DOOM himself. Then on “That’s That,” DOOM chills out a little bit and provides us with some great ear milk. The only reason why I can understand why some people have put this album away is because this unlike any other album DOOM has ever made; it’s more hardcore and features a vastly different production style than the choppier, jazzier, mellower beats that people are used to hearing him over on his previous albums. But if you haven’t already, give this album a go, despite what reviewers and other dudes have said, I officially present this album to you as a dope, slept on album. It’s worth the listen!
