We haven’t heard from rapper/producer Akua Naru since her 2011 opus, A Journey Aflame (which I loved). Akua Naru’s new project, The Miner’s Canary, resembles a recollection of rock ‘n’ roll, blended with soul and harsher rapping styles by the songstress. The title most likely comes from the book of the same name, one that tackles modern-day racism. The afrocentric messages on The Miner’s Canary are strongly supported by soulful, bluesy instrumentals that Akua Naru executive produced herself. The album makes a great example of the artist’s return and acts as another powerful project under her belt. Stream Akua Naru’s The Miner’s Canary below.
