Autumn LaBella: Reign Check [2012]

pic110

Proclaiming to be the new poetic artist of the “neo-hip hop” genre, Ms. Autumn LaBella raps and sings her heart out on the stylistic sounds on her debut album, Reign Check. Produced entirely by jazzy-hip hop producer Marq Beez (save for a few industry beats), Autumn Labella almost ineffable “neo-hip hop” style resembles something of a Joey Bada$$ meets Erykah Badu. Sexy sounds and mellow vibes contribute to the provocative debut of this 19 year-old hip hop artist on her dope new album, Reign Check.

Opening up on the introduction of the project, Autumn LaBella notes how she makes music because she loves to, not because she’s on the mission for money. Perhaps its this humble love for the music that causes Autumn LaBella to have an authentic and miraculously unique sound. Her voice can be slick enough to spit some hot bars over mind-blowing instrumentals, yet it can transition seamlessly to mellifluous vocals over sweet, sweet harmonic bass lines and melodic keys and horns. The emphatic voice of Ms. LaBella is so invogorating that one can’t help but to really feel the music as her voice softly caresses your ears into a state of musical bliss.

From love-talk to smoking and chilling, Autumn LaBella lays her impeccable vocals down track after track on a very mood-changing album. Reign Check embellishes the full-bodied authenticity of Autumn LaBella’s blend of neo-soul and raw hip hop. She can rhyme, she can sing, she can do it all; and with only a handful of features, she really does this strongly on here own.

The production is wild to say the least. Heavily influenced by jazz, the use of Crusaders-like, psychedelic notes and jingling keys, along with subtle percussion backing booming kicks is all quite mastered and perfected to instill the ultimate mood while listening to Autumn LaBella. There’s also a sense of funk in a lot of the beats, which easily pairs well with the love-talk LaBella touches on so frequently. Tracks like “Non-Fiction (feat. SVPXRsmoke, Megah & Legend),” “Kryptonite’s Cure” and definitely “True Colors (feat. Era Hardaway)” feature some of the best beats off the project. “True Colors (feat. Era Hardaway)” is, by far, the best track on the whole project and the best way I could ever imagine this album closing out. The feeling of the whole song is remarkable and that beat just hits you right in the chest with the power and beauty of it all. A phenomenal track in and of itself, it really helps to bring this project to a delightfully satisfying denouement.

Autumn LaBella is no where’s near your average hip hop artist. She isn’t just a singer and she isn’t just a rapper, she’s a “neo-hip hop” artist and a poet with a unparalleled sense for good music. Her vocals are sweet, silky and smooth and flow like honey above the layers of hypnotic musical notes in intricately crafted, jazzy-instrumentals. You won’t want to miss what this young lady can do, and luckily, you can stream and download this entire project for FREE, something you should get on right now…RIGHT now. The wonderful talents of Autumn LaBella are not to be slept on or taken lightly for she is the epitome of dope, underground hip hop music.
