Broke & Repeat Pattern: Badminton Club [2012]

A blend of raw, underground lyrics with post-modern hip hop production, rapper Broke and producer Repeat Pattern joined forces once again to create their end-of-the-year project, Badminton Club. Alternative yet hardcore at the same time, the duo of Broke and Repeat Pattern certainly create an interesting soundscape when their musical styles come together. Broke, a very rugged emcee, and Repeat Pattern, a very eclectic music-maker, Badminton Club puts both artists in their best lights from start to finish.

The opener “At the End of the Day” gets right in with the funky kickin’ sounds of Broke and Repeat Pattern. Broke shows off his lyrical skills mostly, drawing in any and all who will listen. The next track, “Get Off My Piano” is a bit more in-depth as Repeat Pattern provides a broken piano roll as Broke gets more creative and diverse with his rhymes. Some multi’s are tossed in to add to the mix and Broke really shows what he’s got on this one.

A certain, basement-like quality lingers over each track, but that can be a plus or a minus depending on how you look at it. Both artists remain consistent and create a very well put-together project. Repeat Pattern’s productions really add a three-dimensional sound to the album and purges the tracks in deep, harmonic euphorias of electronica and hip hop alike.

Badminton Club is an interesting project because, hearing these two separately, you never would imagine them coming together on an album. But they did, and it was great. Broke’s rugged rhymes bring Pattern’s beats a bit more down to earth with Pattern’s beats elevate Broke’s sound to something more than just an underground rhymer on an instrumental. The yin and the yang, these two opposites make one, dope combo on Badminton Club, and you’re going to want to get a taste of this.

6.5/10
